Funny Cide Indeed Loved, Despite Major Shortcoming

Yes, people still turn out en masse for a champion like 2003 Kentucky Derby winner Funny Cide, even though he's lost a step or two.

I must admit, despite my attempts to the contrary I am a bit of a Funny Cide fan. It wasn't love at first sight. He had to over come a major obstacle. That he isn't a superhorse like Man O' War or Secretariat? No, that's not it.

Before he came along, I could regularly tease New Yorkers that more horses bred in the great state of Missouri, my home state, had won the Kentucky Derby than had New York breds. The two states are now tied, of course.

What, you don't remember Elwood in 1904?
