A Bridesmaid Again

[this picture courtesy of Bill Vassar, track photographer]

Movement ran well and was clearly the best horse in the race, finishing second [see chart - pdf warning]. She broke in the vanguard then settled well just a couple of lengths off the pace. She got boxed in at the rail forcing Jockey Martin Bourdieu to check hard behind the tiring pace setter and swing outside. She was closing strongly at the wire, but was 3/4 of a length short, even though she made up 2+ lengths in about five strides. She passed the winner another two strides after the wire. That's horse racing.

After the race all Martin could say was "sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry." But that's horse racing. She was probably good enough such that she could have been hung four wide throughout and still beat this bunch, but we didn't know that at the time, and Bourdieu didn't want to give up the rail too early. He also told me he had plenty of horse left as she re-rallied.

Do notice that the race set up exactly as Jamey had predicted in the pre-race video. Also, video of the race is available at CalRacing.com.

Who will be listening? Unfortunately probably no one who cares, or can do anything about it. I average about 350 unique visitors each week, and many more when my filly runs. About half are just here for the personal interest story of some fool who bought a racehorse. The other half are racing fans of varying degrees. Readers here for the human interest aspect don’t care about his kind of detail, and insiders are usually too afraid to take any action for fear of retribution. Of this latter half, some are industry insiders. For instance, the CHRB monitors my blog regularly ever since I took them to task for the Intercontinental medication violation cover-up scandal. Also, there are regular readers among DRF & Blood-Horse personnel. Occasionally TVG people come by, but usually only when their names are mentioned. I get substantially more SoCal insiders, a few from KY, NY, Iowa, AZ, FL, and relatively few NorCal horsemen. Nonetheless I’d certainly love to hear what you have to say. You can also email me at brad(at)toteboardbrad.com, and I will not publish your name if you want to remain anonymous.

As for Rick Arthur, blast away. He, like the CHRB as a whole, is an embarrassment. Rick Arthur is a hack that has ingratiated himself with the CHRB to secure a cushy high paying government job with no oversight. This was a position for a highly respected academic, and instead they pulled a make-it-up-as-you-go-along track vet with dubious credentials.

He is now free to employ junk science that has not been peer reviewed to make unfounded assertions.

Let’s just narrowly look at the much heralded TCO2 test he devised. Where has that methodology been peer reviewed? How did he set the threshold? Why do different labs (Davis vs. Florida vs. Ohio, and others) come up with wildly differing results from the same split samples? This doesn’t even begin to address the incompetence of the person that hired Arthur. Ingrid Fermin is the kingpin culprit that has taken “lets make a deal” under Wood and turned it into “lets base fines and suspensions on science which is not accepted by the veterinary community”.
